How to Plan for Mommy Makeover Recovery When You Have Young Kids at Home

You’ve been thinking about a mommy makeover for a while now. The excitement is there, and so is the hesitation.
The part that stalls many parents is the logistics: how do you recover from a multi-procedure surgery when your toddler wants to be picked up every 15 minutes and your baby sleeps in a crib you have to lean into?
Dr. Nodwell has helped hundreds of Ottawa mothers through this transformation. He and his team understand the tension many women feel between wanting something for themselves and feeling like their family’s needs come first. The good news is that with the right planning, both priorities can coexist.
What Does Mommy Makeover Recovery Look Like Week by Week?
The advice to “take it easy” after surgery can feel impossibly vague when you’re responsible for small humans who depend on you for practically everything. So let’s replace vague with specific.
Your mommy makeover will involve two or more procedures, most commonly a tummy tuck, a breast lift or breast augmentation, and liposuction. The benefit of combining procedures is that you get full-body transformation but only have one recovery period.
Week 1
Week one is about rest, full stop. Short, slow walks around the house are recommended to promote circulation, but you should avoid all vigorous activities and lifting anything heavier than a mobile phone. You’ll need someone else handling every aspect of childcare, from feeding and bathing to nappies, school drop-off and bedtime. By the end of this first week, most patients transition from prescribed pain medication to over-the-counter pain relief.
Weeks 2-3
Weeks two and three bring noticeable improvements in how you feel. Many women resume light household tasks like folding laundry or preparing simple meals. The lifting restriction remains firmly in place. You cannot pick up your child, carry a car seat, push a heavy stroller or wrestle a toddler into a coat. These weeks can be deceptive because you’ll feel better than you actually are, and overdoing it can compromise your results.
Weeks 4-6
Weeks four through six mark the return to something resembling your normal routine. You can become more active, including light exercise, and resume more of the tasks you’re used to in your personal and professional life. Dr. Nodwell will provide individualized guidance on when your lifting and exercise restrictions can be lifted. For most patients, this is the six-week point.
Week 6 and Beyond
Beyond six weeks, you’ll gradually resume vigorous activities as cleared by Dr. Nodwell. By three months post-surgery, most patients are fully back to their pre-surgery activity levels — the difference being that they now feel significantly more confident in the body doing those activities.
How Should You Plan Post-Surgery Childcare Based on Your Children’s Ages?
The internet’s mommy makeover recovery advice rarely accounts for the reality that a six-month-old and a six-year-old require entirely different types of care from their parents (not to mention all the other factors that make one family different from another).
Your childcare plan must be based on your unique family circumstances, but here are some guidelines that may help:
Infants (0 to 12 Months)
Mommy makeover surgery is not recommended until at least six months post-childbirth, but ideally 12 months. This is, in part, because babies require constant physical care in their first year, and it is difficult to juggle those responsibilities with the rest your body needs during surgical recovery. This timing is also recommended so your body has time to heal and stabilize from the rigours of pregnancy before taking on the rigours of surgery.
Toddlers (1 to 3 Years)
This is typically the most physically demanding age group during surgical recovery. Toddlers are heavy, unpredictable and hardwired to seek your attention. Plan for three to four weeks of extensive support, ideally from someone you and your child already trust and feel comfortable with. Starting to integrate your chosen caregiver into your lives before surgery day often makes the adjustment smoother for everyone.
Preschoolers (3 to 5 Years)
Children at this age can follow basic instructions and engage in independent play for longer stretches, and they’re old enough to understand a simplified explanation of why you need to rest. All of this is good news for recovery. Still, they require physical help with many critical tasks, like dressing and bathing, so plan for two to three weeks of support to get you through the most delicate stages of healing.
School-Age Children (6 and Older)
School-age children are the easiest to navigate during recovery. You’ll need someone else to handle transportation to and from school and extracurriculars for the first two weeks, but you may not need as much support around the house. In fact, children in this age group can be excellent helpers for tasks like fetching a glass of water or bringing you the remote, and they may even feel proud about taking on extra responsibilities.
How Should You Prepare Your Home Before Mommy Makeover Surgery?
Preparing your home ahead of time sets you up for a smoother, less stressful recovery. Focus on making changes that will reduce friction in the days when bending, reaching and lifting are off-limits.
Many patients like to batch-cook and freeze meals that can be eaten with minimal reheating effort. If you do not enjoy cooking or don’t have the bandwidth, Ottawa has excellent meal prep and delivery services.
Set up a dedicated recovery station. Keep necessary items — such as your medications, your phone charger, a water bottle, healthy snacks, entertainment, extra pillows for elevation and any medical supplies — within arm’s reach. Position everything at a height that doesn’t require reaching up or bending down.
Prepare comfortable, front-opening clothing for yourself, like zip-up hoodies and button-front shirts. You won’t want to have to pull items on and off over your head. Fill all prescriptions in advance, and confirm transportation arrangements for surgery day and your first follow-up appointment.
What Should You Tell Your Children About Your Mommy Makeover Surgery?
This question weighs on some mothers more than whether to have surgery in the first place.
There’s no single right answer. Ultimately, you will have to decide what’s right for your family, but we can share what some of our patients have found helpful over the years.
Toddlers and Preschoolers
Keeping it simple and reassuring is often best. Something along the lines of “Mummy is seeing a special doctor to feel better, and Grandma and Grandpa are going to help take care of you for a little while” is more than sufficient. Young children take their emotional cues from you; if you’re calm and matter-of-fact, they’ll respond in kind. Avoid overexplaining. What they need to know is that you’ll be okay and people they love will be looking after them.
School-Age Children
At this stage, children can handle more detail and, frankly, often want it. You might explain that you’re having a procedure to help you feel more comfortable, that you’ll need to rest afterward, and that they can help by being patient and bringing you things when you need them. Framing their role as helpful rather than passive can give them a sense of agency instead of anxiety.
What Questions Should You Ask During Your Mommy Makeover Consultation?
Coming to your consultation with logistics-focused questions helps you leave with a plan for your preparation and recovery, as well as the surgery itself. Dr. Nodwell and his team are accustomed to these conversations and encourage them.
Here are some questions you may wish to address during your appointment:
- Which combination of procedures do you recommend for my specific concerns, and how does that combination affect my recovery timeline?
- What does the first week of recovery realistically look like for a parent with [age of your children]?
- Based on the weight of my child(ren), when will I be able to lift them safely?
- Are there pre-surgery fitness or health steps I should take to optimize my recovery?
- What’s your recommendation for timing surgery around my family calendar?
- Can my procedures be staged across two sessions if combining everything at once doesn’t work with my family’s schedule?
